I've been following the Commander X16 project for a while and looking forward to it.
Finally decided to register so I could join everyone else in bike-shedding and feature creeping this poor project to death. Just kidding. I think. Well, I won't do that. Some of you seem to be, though.
I'm an old school Commodore guy, but of the odd-ball variety. My parents couldn't afford the Commodore 64, but in '86 or '87 or so they got me a Plus/4 for $70 off the COMB liquidator catalog, and I traded my Optimus Prime transformer and $25 to a middle school buddy for his old 1541 drive after he got a C128 and a fancy pants 1571 drive. (Looking at today's collector prices of vintage G1 transformers complete in the box, that may not have been a great deal, come to think of it)
The Plus 4 was very very limited as we all know, but I had fun with it and the working around the limitations was half the challenge. I wrote a color draw program in BASIC that was good enough to make some pretty neat drawings and even saved them (no, I didn't figure out any sort of compression) to disk. The code wasn't pretty, but hey BASIC is supposed to look like a bowl of pasta when you're done . Still bummed to this day that my parents sold the machine AND all my disks to some neighbor kid while I was off at college, but alas its all gone. Recently got into retro-computing in the last few years and so here I am.
Anyway, REALLY looking forward to this thing coming out (take my money, please) but also a little concerned if I'm honest about the delays and the headaches with the 2nd Proto board. Personally, I'll be 3d printing an all-in-one case that will hold the board and keyboard in something that looks like a version of the Plus/4 (of course!, nostalgia is a hell of a motivator), so I'm not fussed about expansion slots or all that. Best of luck to the team and you've got my support to get this thing to release!
