Domain confusion leads to problems with cookies

The forum can't decide if commanderx16.com or cx16forum.com is its home, and it's creating problems for me with logging in and staying logged in.

I go to commanderx16.com, try to log in and find myself redirected to cx16forum.com, not logged in. Sometimes it kicks me out in the middle of the session, I believe for the same reason.

Edit: I posted this on commanderx16.com, got immediately redirected to cx16forum.com, logged out again (and double posted because I used the back button)

Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Is cx16forum.com the new official address?

Yes. Use cx16forum.com for the forums. Use CommanderX16.com if you want information about the computer. Right now, they're pointing to the same files (so you can technically navigate the site with either domain), but since this is causing problems with cookies, I'll split them out.

As to "why", David owns the trademark for Commander X16. He's being generous by letting us use it, but he doesn't want to manage forums or other community sites. So we have a couple of different domains that point to this site, to allow for the eventual decision to transfer the domain back to his servers.

I didn't think too hard about this when the domain transfer was happening, I just kept logging in until the website stopped asking me to login. :P

Ok, I've made a few configuration changes on the server that should help with this. If you try to go to https://commanderx16.com/forum/(anything), it should redirect to cx16forum.com.

It's better now. Avoiding commanderx16.com solved most of the issues for me. There seems to be some confusion in the configuration whether "www.cx16forum.com" or just "cx16forum.com" is the correct domain, but I only saw this happen once and can't recall the deets.

Off-topic question: is there any way you can make Google results that still point to the old links work? phpBB's search is a bad joke, especially in tech circles with a lot of 3-letter words.

Not that I'm aware of. We'd have to write some sort of cross-reference page that forwards to this page... that is theoretically possible, but not something I have time to tackle right now, TBH.

I got bitten by this; I had originally bookmarked the forums after getting here via the "community" link in the menu on the homepage, but that was on the "commanderx16.com" domain. The forums worked just fine, but when I registered and tried to log in (and then again when I tried to post), I kept getting redirected to the "cx16forum.com" domain.

There's a "forum" link in the bottom right of the homepage which goes to this domain, but I think the links in the menu need to also be updated. :P

I do plan to rebuild that page from the ground up. When done, it will generally look the same, but be much simpler on the back end, without all the JavaScript and other stuff. When I do that, I'll update the links as I go. (Because right now, trying to even find the links is a bit of a challenge.)
