How do I get sound?

I'm using R41 of the emulator and just started trying to do sound tests. But I can't get sound to work.
What do I need?

The first thing I'm going suggest is upgrading to R43.

First, Jaw drop, I had heard of R42 and R43 but had not seen a link to them!
https://github.com/commanderx16/x16-emulator/releases this was the only link I had to emulators!

next, R43 seems to have broken everything else I had... i.e. joysticks, my game loads but I have no controls.
(-joy1 wasn't working in R41 either, it defaulted to keyboard, but -joy2 worked.)

You don't have to use the -sound option to get sound unless you want the sound output to go to a specific device. And then, you have to use the FULL description.

-sound "Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio)"

ah. "quotation marks" to surround the full title. didn't know that. cause Speakers (Real...etc.) didn't work.
but, I can't seem to get any sound in the first place. will try again.

Are you in Windows or Linux

Windows 10. couldn't get sound on R38, R41, or R43.

When you say you can't get sound.....
Game programs run but no sound ?
You tried the FMPLAY or PSGPLAY in BASIC ?
I assume that in the Host system (Windows 10 in your case) sound is working properly
