Will there be limits on purchases of the X16 at launch?

Post by StephenHorn »

Per the title, are there any plans to limit the number of units that a person can purchase at launch?

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of possibly playing around with expansion cards, but since I'd be a novice to that area, I'd want a second unit so I don't need to worry (as much) about literally blowing up the unit. The topic of ordering limits doesn't seem to be addressed by the FAQ. Maybe this is still too early to discuss, but I thought I'd put the question out there.

To be clear, I'm only personally thinking about ordering a second X16. I'm not planning to order 16 X16s, though that could lead to an entertaining Youtube video akin to the 3 PS3s, 4 PS4s, and 5 PS5s. So even if there are limits to the number that folks can order, I'm really just hoping the limit is greater than 1. ?

I also accept pull requests for x16emu, the official X16 emulator. (x16-emulator on GitHub)

In the early 90s my company procured a 24 CPU Sequent S81 based on 16 MHz 386’s to host our X.25 based search and retrieval system.  At another employer in the late 90s I worked on Sun Solaris machines with 64 x 400 MHz CPUs.

It’s the 2020s now, why not qty. 16 x16s stacked in “pizza” boxes.  Not quite as powerful as the systems I mentioned but if somebody can cobble together a distributed kernel (or, ‘kernal’), maybe we can get it to play chess, a throw back to Jennings Microchess meets deep blue.

I’m pretty sure TexElec can build an inexpensive scalable-coherent-interconnect bus card.

That’s an interesting question. It’s not something we have discussed. I think it is more likely that we will set a realistic delivery target date where we could get all orders delivered by, than actuality limit orders.

The initial production run is going to set us back some serious cash.  So, I'd think everyone involved would be happy to sell them all as quickly as possible to get us back in the black.

I guess a related topic is: how many can be produced per day/week/month, or if it might be necessary to ration.

In the unlikely event that we sell more than we can produce by the crowdfunding delivery estimate (TBA) we will be able to move the campaign to “out of stock” status temporarily while we catch up or expand operations as needed. We will be hosting the crowdfunding on this website so will have more options. But as I say, that is unlikely.

We will put measures in place to prevent bulk buys with the intention of reselling on eBay at a profit.

More info when we have it.

OMG. Is this actually likely to happen? I mean did this happen in the past? Did other similar projects suffer from such reselling?

I haven’t seen it on a huge scale but on a smaller level yes, the ZX Spectrum Next comes to mind.
