What ever became of Jestin's attempt at this very project, essentially a rewrite of the VIC-20's user guide for the X16?

Nice. I was disappointed that I ran out of bullets and was left to just wander around and avoid being shot. Is that in the original arcade version? It always seemed to me that I could shoot as much as I wanted, but only do a 'zap the entire grid' once a level.

They do say 4 colors, so that is only 2 bits per pixel...

There's a way to implement giving the device number 2 identifier to the serial card... but you'd have to write the driver to do that, yourself.

I feel like this is sufficiently complicated, and sufficiently different from the way CBM BASIC 2.0 works, as to warrant being its own project.

Yes, that's a setting. If you have an AUTOBOOT.X16 file on your SD card, then the banner won't be loaded (unless the BANNER command is included in the autoboot file).
